Why do babies have to travel facing backwards?

Answer

Baby’s neck muscles are not fully developed yet. If the baby is transported in a forward-facing position, his or her head will be propelled forward during a sudden stop or collision. This can cause a serious neck injury and may even be fatal. By placing the baby in a rear-facing position, the force exerted during an accident will be distributed across the baby’s entire back.
